Buffalo streakers.jpg

Saturday on the road at Buffalo, Pitt registered a tackle that didn't show up in the stat sheet. In the second half, two Bulls fans ran onto the field from the Buffalo sideline towards the Pitt sideline untouched. In an attempt to make it through the Panthers' end of the field, Pitt Officer Paul Burgh made one of the more talked about tackles of the day. Listen to the audio of that tackle here, compliments of Sportsradio 93.7 The Fan:

The Pitt family can claim another world champion this morning. Former Pitt women's basketball star Shavonte Zellous helped lead the Indiana Fever to the WNBA title last night over the heavily favored Minnesota Lynx in the best-of-five series. The Fever needed just four games to earn their first-ever championship.

The Pitt men's team was selected to finish sixth at Big East media day on Wednesday, which is voted on by league coaches. Additionally, freshman Steven Adams was picked as the Preseason Big East Rookie of the Year and senior guard Tray Woodall earned Big East honorable mention honors.

The following entry was written by Senior Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations, and dear friend of Beano Cook, E.J. Borghetti.

On the day of his passing, the name "Beano Cook" was a trending topic on Twitter.

It was a humorous irony that I know he would love.

Homecoming week for the University of Pittsburgh is here and there are numerous activities for everyone. Tonight marks the basketball teams' Midnight Madness festivities and other exciting Pitt events. On Saturday, the action gets started early with the main attraction - Pitt vs. Louisville - kicking off at 11 a.m. from Heinz Field.

On Sunday, the focus returns to basketball as the Panthers host their annual Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair and Blue-Gold Scrimmage.

The Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair will include free blood pressure and health screenings and educational heart health displays.

It is the fourth year that the Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair will be held in Pittsburgh. Maggie Dixon, Coach Dixon's sister, was the vibrant, passionate and successful head coach of the Army Black Knights women's basketball team. In 2006, she guided her team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Just weeks later, Maggie died suddenly due to a heart arrhythmia. She was only 28 years old.

Men's Basketball Team Autographs

12-1 p.m. * Petersen Events Center

Fans will have the opportunity to obtain autographs from the players and coaches in the lobby and concourse of the Petersen Events Center.

Blue-Gold Scrimmage

2 p.m. * Petersen Events Center

It's your first chance to see the 2012-13 team in action as they scrimmage against each other. Head Coach Jamie Dixon and Jeff Hathhorn will have the call on Pitt Panthers Television's live broadcast, Comcast channel 188 or 210.

Pitt defensive coordinator Dave Huxtable has a fiery persona, and his personality seems to be rubbing off on a defensive unit that has improved consistently throughout the season and now ranks 22nd in total defense nationally.

Earlier this morning at a press conference at the Petersen Events Center, men's basketball coach Jamie Dixon was named an honorary spokesman for fitUnited Pittsburgh, a United Way initiative which focuses on combating the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States.

Created by the United Way and supported by more than 35 local corporations and organizations, fitUnited Pittsburgh focuses on children in Allegheny County--from birth to pre-teen years--in an effort to impact the health and wellness of our community's children. The initiative will encourage neighborhoods throughout Allegheny County, by way of hundreds of corporations and organizations, to adopt and adapt proven practices and programs in improving childhood nutrition and physical activity.

Shavonte Zellous is one of the most recognizable names in Pitt basketball history. The third-leading scorer in Panthers history, Zellous compiled 2,251 points over her illustrious collegiate career. The athletic guard and three-time All-Big East first team honoree is ranked statistically in nearly every category in the Pitt women's basketball record book.

The No. 11 overall selection in the 2009 WNBA Draft has enjoyed a successful career in both the WNBA and overseas.  She averaged 18.6 points for Turkish league club Mersin BSB last season and re-signed with the squad in July.

Zellous averaged 7.5 points and 2.7 rebounds for the Indiana Fever this summer, while earning a start in all 31 regular season games.  The Fever are currently battling the Atlanta Dream in the Eastern Conference semifinal series with game three in the series slated for Tuesday in Indianapolis.  Zellous had 15 points on Sunday to help lead the Fever to a 103-88 win and even the best-of-three series at a game apiece.

We caught up with Zellous for a chat after a Fever practice to see what the former Panther great has been up to.
