Abby
Dowd has had an interesting path to the Pitt campus and more specifically, the
women's basketball team.
The
5-9 guard earned MAC All-Rookie team honors her freshman year at the University
at Buffalo (2010), but elected to transfer -- albeit without basketball -- after
the spring semester. Dowd enrolled at Pitt and got adjusted to life as a
'normal' student, but longings for the basketball court led her to the Petersen
Events Center. She attended a game in 2010 and decided to go out on a limb and
email the coaches to ask about a walk-on opportunity. Dowd not only
earned that, but her hard work grabbed her a roster spot a few months later.
Dowd's
gregarious and sometimes just plain down-right wacky personality can lighten
any mood (check out her essay, What
I Did This Summer, as an example), but that's not to say the Tipp City,
Ohio, native hasn't proved she has a serious side. Her leadership has twice
earned her the co-captain title.
