PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh hosted its annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Breakfast to honor 333 student-athletes and 53 members of the dance and cheer squad for their outstanding academic achievements during the 2013 spring and fall semesters. The awards presentation was held in the Connolly Ballroom of Alumni Hall on the Pitt campus.
Pitt Alumni Association President Jane Allred, an accomplished marketing professional, was among the special guests. Career and Life Skills Coordinator Lisa Auld served as master of ceremonies.
"Not only do you accomplish the academic side of student life, but you also train, you travel, you compete and you get up and do it all over again the next day," said Allred in addressing the honorees. "You are that combination of mind, body and spirit that just doesn't settle for ordinary. You pursue excellence in all that you do. While we often admire your achievements on the field of competition, we don't often have the opportunity to honor your academic excellence. Today is that opportunity."
Pitt's Academic Support Services staff handed out "Blue" awards to those student-athletes who achieved grade-point averages between a 3.0 and 3.49 and "Gold" awards for those who earned between a 3.5 and 4.0.
In total, 179 student-athletes earned Blue Scholar-Athlete recognition, while 194 were Gold Scholar-Athlete honorees. Special recognition was given to 24 student-athletes who earned 4.0 GPAs.
"When I came here in 1996, we used to have this breakfast in a room half the size," Pitt Athletic Director Steve Pederson said. "We had about the same number of student-athletes, but we didn't have 333 student-athletes who achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher at one of the great universities in the country.
"We are so proud of each one of you, and I'm also grateful to our staff and our coaches. We have been able to assemble a group of coaches who understand that we are here to win championships, but we're going to do it the right way. When you leave here, we want you to be holding a degree from this great university, doing something that you love to do. So the next phase of your life will be greater than the last phase of your life and that's really the mission here."
Pederson also announced Pitt's Academic Team Awards. The women's swimming and diving team earned the overall Top Academic Team honor. The top achieving men's team was soccer, a distinction they earned for the fifth consecutive year. Women's volleyball earned the Most Improved Team award.
