PITT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Track and Field: Andrew Wells. The sophomore set a new school record in the discus at the Charlotte 49er with a throw of 54.50m. He finished third overall out of 51 athletes and broke the previous school record which had been held by Steve Hein since 1972.  (Read more).

OTHER TOP PITT WEEKLY PERFORMANCES

Baseball: Casey Roche. Roche batted .409 with nine hits, seven RBI and 12 total bases to lead Pitt last weekend at the Panthers Classic II. Through 18 games so far, Roche leads the Panthers in at bats (73), hits (28), runs (23) and RBI (22).  (Read more).

Tennis: Kimmy Borza. Borza was one of two Panthers to win all four of her matches last week. On Wednesday, she and her doubles teammate Karma Parbhu blanked Savannah State 8-0, and then she won third singles in straight sets 6-0, 6-4. The next day against Coastal Carolina, Borza and Parbhu won third doubles 8-4, and then Borza won another straight set decision in third singles, this time defeating Shelby Bates 6-2, 6-2. Borza is now 7-2 overall in singles and 9-3 in doubles.  (Read more).

Gymnastics: Alyssa Adrian. Adrian won the vault and the bars events against No. 12 Auburn on senior night. Her winning vault score of 9.850 marked just the second time in her collegiate career that she had competed in that event. (Read More). 

Softball: Carissa Throckmorton. Throckmorton led the team with a .462 batting average at the Cherry Blossom Classic. The sophomore also posted team-highs in hits (6), runs (4) and doubles (2). She hit two homers at the tournament, bringing her total to five on the season, which marks a new career-high.  (Read more).

Track and Field: Daniel Lipus, Andrew Cerrito, Brett Millar and Taylor Slaney. All four athletes won an individual event at the Charlotte 49er. Lipus won the 1,500 meter run in a time of 3:49.26, while Cerrito won the 3,000 meters in 8:36.31. Millar and Slaney took the top spot in the men's and women's javelin with distances of 61.44m and 46.71m, respectively. (Read More).

ACC FACT:

In the latest "Best Colleges" rankings released by US News & World Report, the ACC leads the way among BCS automatic-qualifying conference, with a combined average of 49.2. The ACC placed seven schools in the Top 38, three more than any other conference. The ACC is the only conference to have every school ranked in the Top 120 and have had at least one school in the Top 10 every year since 2006.
