PITT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Wrestling: Matt Wilps. The redshirt senior went 5-1 at the NCAA Championship Meet in the 197 lb weight class and finished third overall, earning All-American status for the second-consecutive season. Wilps defeated Taylor Meeks of Oregon State in the third place match by a 17-2 technical fall victory and became the 18th wrestler in Pitt history to earn multiple All-America honors. He finishes his career with 129 victories, which is the fifth most in school history. He is a three-time EWL Champion and a two-time EWL Most Outstanding Wrestler.  (Read more).

OTHER TOP PITT WEEKLY PERFORMANCES

Gymnastics: Alyssa Adrian. Adrian won the all-around competition at the EAGL Championship Meet with a score of 39.250. Adrian helped the Panthers to a third place finish at the meet, its highest since 2000. As a team, the Panthers clinched a berth in the NCAA Regional Meet. (Read more).

Baseball: Stephen Vranka. Vranka led Pitt's offensive charge as the Panthers swept the defending Big East Champion St. John's. Vranka paced the offense with a .545 batting average, six hits and six runs. He also led the team in slugging percentage (.818) and on-base percentage (.643). He had multi RBI games in two of the three outings and tallied three doubles over the course of the weekend. (Read more).

Softball: Kaila Balatgek. The Panthers' shortstop batted .400 against St. John's with three doubles and scored three runs. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning of game two, Balatgek roped a double to right center which scored the game winning run in extras, giving Pitt a 3-2 walk-off victory.  (Read more).

Wrestling: Zac Thomusseit. Thomusseit earned All-American honors by finishing fifth at the NCAA Championship Meet in the 285 lb weight class. He defeated Jarod Trice of Central Michigan in the fifth place match, and he concludes his career with 97 victories, three NCAA appearances and two EWL titles. (Read More).

Swimming and Diving: Kelsey Herbst. Herbst concluded her career by swimming the 500 and the 1650 yard freestyle events at the NCAA Women's National Championship Meet. Herbst swam her third fastest 500 freestyle time of the season and her second fastest 1650 freestyle time. She ends her career as the school record holder in both events, as well as the 1000 yard freestyle and as a member of the 800 yard freestyle relay team. (Read more).

PITT PLAY OF THE WEEK

Softball: With the Panthers leading St. John's 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning in the rubber match between the two teams, pitcher Savannah King inherited a bases-loaded, one out situation. King tallied back-to-back strikeouts to get Pitt out of the inning as the Panthers went on to win the game and take 2-of-3 from the Red Storm.
