PITT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Baseball: Steven Shelinsky, Jr. The junior outfielder batted .316 last week with six hits, six runs and 16 RBI to help the Panthers go 5-1. Three of Shelinsky’s six hits went for home runs and he drove in five runs on two separate occasions (first game against Coppin State and the second game against Rutgers). He now has a team-high 12 homers on the season and the second most runs batted in with 46. (Read more).

OTHER TOP PITT WEEKLY PERFORMANCES

Track and Field: Andrew Wells. Wells set the school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 55.94 at the Larry Ellis Invitational. He topped Patrick Harding’s previous record of 54.17 which was set in 2002. In his first season at Pitt, Wells has reset the school record in the hammer throw and the discus. (Read more).

Baseball: Ethan Mildren. Mildren pitched seven innings against Rutgers in the opening game of the series and allowed just five hits and one earned run to pick up his seventh win of the season. Mildren improved his record to 7-2 with a 2.37 ERA. (Read more).

Track and Field: Brycen Spratling. Spratling took first place in the 400 meter dash at the Legacy Classic hosted by Morgan State, and ran the lead off leg for the 4x400 meter relay team which also took first place. Spratling then placed third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.20, which was two tenths of a second shy of his personal-best. (Read more).

Softball: Tori Nirschl. The freshman left fielder batted .333 against No. 8 Louisville and Notre Dame with five hits, four runs, a homer, two RBI and two walks. The home run was her 11th of the season which ranks Nirschl fourth in the Big East. (Read more).

Track and Field: Jonnique Lawrence. Lawrence picked up a pair of second place finishes at the Legacy Classic hosted by Morgan State, going 24.02 in the 200 meter dash and 56.31 in the 400 meter dash. She also ran the second leg for the winning 4x400 meter relay team.  (Read more).

PITT PLAY OF THE WEEK:

Baseball: With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning against Rutgers and runners on the corners, junior Stephen Vranka crushed a three run walk-off homer over the left field fence to give the Panthers a 6-3 victory and the series sweep. Vranka was named to the Big East Honor Roll for his efforts. (Read more).

The University of Pittsburgh is one of only eight institutions to rank in the very top cluster of U.S. public research universities over the past five years, according to The Top American Research Universities report issued by the Center for Measuring University Performance. Joining Pitt in that prestigious group is soon-to-be conference partner North Carolina. Also in that group are Cal-Berkeley, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, UCLA and Wisconsin.
