SUMMER OUTSIDE TEAM/LEAGUE PARTICIPATION
Outside participation occurs when a current student-athlete either practices or competes, as a member of a team or as an individual, while not representing the University of Pittsburgh. It should be noted that NCAA regulations are specific to this activity and participating in or on any impermissible leagues/teams, or participating without prior approval from the institution can render a student-athlete INELIGIBLE for continued athletic involvement here at Pitt.
It is particularly important that an institution knows ahead of time of their student-athletes' involvement with an outside team because in some cases there are limitations on the types of leagues/teams that athletes can be a part of, the proximity of the league/team to their home and/or campus address, and the number of their fellow Pitt teammates who may participate on the same outside team with them.
Any outside summer competition (home or on campus) that Pitt student-athletes may be involved in over the vacation period must be approved in advance by the Compliance Office, Head Coach and Athletic Director. In order to obtain this approval, student-athletes are required to use the Outside Athletic Team/League Competition Approval Form (or for basketball Summer Basketball League Approval Form), which are located, with a process explanation, on the "Current Student-Athletes" page of the Pitt Athletics Compliance web site.
In the past, student-athletes have been required by the NCAA to sit out games due to impermissible events that they unknowingly participated in over the summer vacation. This approval process protects our student-athletes from that possibility.
Please note that outside summer competition constitutes any events that are organized and go beyond regular "pick-up game" activity. This could include (but is not limited to):
Intramurals
Summer "Leagues"
Charity/Celebrity Games/Activities
Please be sure all Summer Outside Team/League Participation Approval Forms are submitted to the Compliance Office before the end of the Spring 2008 semester. This requirement is mandatory.
