University of Pittsburgh faculty, staff, students and members of Pitt Athletics showed the Oakland community how much they care by participating in one of the area's largest community service projects in the United Way's Annual Day of Caring.

September 28 was the 17th Annual Pitt Day of Caring; a day in which Pitt continued its legacy of service.

In response to years of successful voluntary work, Pitt's 17th Annual Day of Caring featured more service projects than ever, both in local neighborhoods close to campus and at agencies of regional importance. Pitt Athletics volunteers assisted the Oakland Planning and Development Corporation with street beautification along Robinson Street Extension.

"I think it's a great day and everyone is excited to be out here. I think, most importantly, that everyone realizes they're doing great work for a great cause," said Assistant Athletic Director for Olympic Sports Kirk Bruce. "People drive by this area often and it's important that we do our part in trying to clean it up."

Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg and many other campus leaders have supported this great endeavor in past years by rolling up their sleeves and personally assisting with various projects as well as by encouraging the entire University community to join them. As a result, last year's event brought out nearly 400 Pitt volunteers who donated their time and energy to help the cause.
