During his time at Pitt, running back Tony Dorsett set or tied 18 career rushing records and led Pitt to a perfect 12-0 record and a National Championship in the 1976 season. In addition, Dorsett was the winner of the 1976 Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, and became the first player in NCAA history to reach over 6,000 career rushing yards. In 1977, Dorsett was the first-round selection of the Dallas Cowboys where he played 11 seasons, including two Super Bowls and four Pro Bowls. Dorsett left his professional mark on the NFL, finishing his career as the league's second all-time leading rusher. Dorsett also has the distinction of being one of only two players in the history of football to win the Heisman Trophy, a collegiate national championship, a Super Bowl championship, and be elected into both the College and Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Pittsburgh native and former Panthers star Curtis Martin is recognized as one of the top NFL running backs of all time. During his time at Pitt, Martin rushed for over 2,600 yards and earned the First-team All-Big East running back award in 1993. Martin was the third-round draft pick of the New England Patriots in 1995 and went on to become a five-time Pro Bowler during his 12-year NFL career. Martin retired fourth all-time with 14,101 rushing yards and third all-time with 3,518 attempts.

Roger Staubach was one of the best NFL quarterbacks and was ranked the 29th greatest football player by The Sporting News. After appearing in four Super Bowls, winning two of them, and receiving the MVP award for Super Bowl VI, Staubach was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his 11 years in the league. He retired with the highest passer rating of all time and was voted to six Pro Bowls as well. Staubach won the 1963 Heisman Trophy as a member of the Navy Midshipmen, played in the 1964 Cotton Bowl, and won induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981.
