Kate McCartney joined the University of Pittsburgh athletic department in 2011 as an athletic trainer. McCartney works specifically with the women’s volleyball team as well as overseeing the graduate student working with the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. In her time at Pitt, McCartney has also worked with the men’s and women’s track and field teams and has supervised graduate students for the gymnastics and softball teams as well.
McCartney completed her undergraduate degree in athletic training from Miami University in 2005 then went on to receive her master’s degree in exercise physiology in 2007 from The University of Akron. While at The University of Akron, McCartney served as the athletic trainer for the women’s softball team.
Prior to joining the Panthers’ staff in 2011, McCartney worked just up the street at Duquesne University as the athletic trainer for the women’s soccer, women’s volleyball and women’s lacrosse teams.
The Fremont, Ohio, native now resides in West Mifflin, Pa.

Favorite sports moment at Pitt?
When Maria Genitsaridi served 8 straight points for a huge comeback victory for Pitt Volleyball at home versus NC State. It marked a turnaround for that game, but also for our whole 2016 season.
What is your favorite thing to do in the city of Pittsburgh?
Go out to dinner with friends, there are so many great new restaurants popping up we find it a challenge to try them all!
What is your favorite aspect of working in Pitt’s athletic department?
The people I get to work with every day, I truly believe we make up the best department in the country!
