Celeste Welsh joined the Pitt Athletic Department in 2004. Serving in the capacity of media relations coordinator, Welsh significantly impacts the overall operations of media relations with a wide array of responsibilities.
Welsh is highly instrumental in the oversight of Pitt’s football press box at Heinz Field and press row for basketball at the Petersen Events Center. A key liaison for visiting media, professional scouts and bowl game representatives, she dramatically upgraded the efficiency of Pitt’s credentialing by introducing an online system.
As an integral member of Pitt’s football media relations team, Welsh has shared in three “Super 11” sports information recognitions from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
Welsh is equally impactful beyond game days. She is a seasoned editor of various athletic publications and also oversees a highly successful undergraduate internship program.
Her skills have been highly sought at various high-profile sporting events beyond Pitt. She has worked such national-caliber events as the Kentucky Derby (2017), US Golf Open (2016), the men’s basketball NCAA Tournament (2012 and 2015), and the women’s basketball NCAA Tournament (2007).
Prior to Pitt, Welsh worked at neighboring Duquesne University from 2000-04 as Assistant to the Athletic Director. Her duties included the coordination of special events, including golf outings, awards dinners and banquets. She also managed team camps and travel, the management of interns and student assistants and coordinated events for the fundraising organization “Dukes Court.”
Welsh started her professional career as public relations director for the Montour School District in 1996. She wrote and published award-winning community newsletters, implemented such impactful initiatives as “Employee of the Month,” “Buy-A-Brick” fundraising program, “Teacher Excellence Award Program,” and the “Vietnam Elementary School Fundraising Event.” Welsh was also recognized by the district for her grant writing ability for the very successful after-school program, “Imagine That,” which is still in existence today.
Welsh was a communications and rhetoric major at Robert Morris University. She is married to Dominic, has two children, Evan and Kylie, daughter-in-law Rachel, and grandson, Milo.
