NC State Hands Pitt First ACC Loss of Season

Panthers Winning-Streak Comes to a Close
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team was handed its first ACC loss of the season as NC State defeated the Panthers 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House
Pitt (16-5, 9-1 ACC) saw its 13-match winning streak and undefeated record in conference play come to an end as the Wolfpack (14-7, 9-1 ACC) outplayed the Panthers in four sets, earning its first win in program history in Pittsburgh territory. The two teams are now tied for first in the ACC, each with a 9-1 record.
For the first time since Sept. 22 when the Panthers dropped their opening set to Syracuse, Pitt fell behind NC State as the Wolfpack took the first frame 25-12.The Panthers got back on track in the second, taking down NC State 25-15. Pitt played the Wolfpack tough in the final two sets but was unable to come out on top.
Freshman Kayla Lund was solid for the Panthers on offense, recording a career-high 14 kills and .345 hitting percentage. She was one of three players that tallied double-digit kills, the other two being sophomores Nika Markovic (12) and Layne Van Buskirk (10).
Junior Kamalani Akeo aided Pitt's attack putting up 37 assists.
Defensively Pitt out-dug NC State 41-37, with redshirt sophomore Stephanie Williams leading the way with 12. At the net, Pitt posted 9.5 teams blocks. Markovic finished with five block assists.
From the service line, the Panthers had three Panthers record two aces apiece, including Markovic, Lund and serving sub Emily Horner.
Set One: NC State 25, Pitt 21
Set one went to NC State after the Wolfpack worked its way from behind.
Pitt battled out of the gate, taking a 4-0 lead but it wasn't long before the two teams were exchanging back-and-forth points as NC State worked its way back.
The Panthers called the first timeout of the set as the Wolfpack went ahead by two, 11-9, but out of the break Williams and Lund posted consecutive kills to knot the score once again.
In a tight race, Pitt found a two-point lead late in the set but following a timeout call by NC State the Wolfpack turned the score in their favor after notching three kills and a block to regain a 22-20 lead.
The Panthers used their final timeout of the frame but were unable to hold off NC State who roped off three-straight points to end the set.
Set Two: Pitt 25, NC State 15
Pitt got back on track in the second set downing the Wolfpack 25-15, while hitting .375 in the frame with 13 kills.
The Panthers led early in the second set, finding a three-point advantage, but once again the Wolfpack came back to tie the set 10-10.
It was all Pitt following the tie score as the Panthers used a 9-1 run to take a 19-11 lead against NC State. The Panthers posted five kills through those points, including three by Markovic and two by Ndee. Pitt's defense was also on point as it blocked multiple attacks.
The Panthers continued their dominance through the final points of the set, taking set two 25-15.
Set Three: NC State 25, Pitt 19
Pitt and the Wolfpack battled it out in the third set, but NC State came out on top 25-19 as the visiting team dominated on offense.
The Wolfpack used a late run to push out in front of the Panthers by three, 20-17 forcing Pitt to call its first of two timeouts. The second came just a point later as NC State tacked on another.
The Panthers were unable to hold off the Wolfpack in the end.
Set Four: NC State 25, Pitt 18
NC State picked up the win after holding off Pitt 25-18 in the fourth set.
The Panthers fell behind early in the fourth set, trailing 15-10 at the media timeout. Pitt had trouble finding a rhythm on offense as it was held to just 11 kills.
The home team called its first official timeout of the set trailing by seven, 18-11 and used its second just three points later as the Panthers trailed by eight.
Pitt was able to pull back within four in the final points of the set but three straight points for the Wolfpack closed out the match.

Pitt will travel to face Louisville and Notre Dame next weekend. The Panthers take on the Cardinals Friday, Oct 27 at 7 p.m. and Fighting Irish Sunday, Oct 29 at 1 p.m.
