Pitt Downs Wake Forest in Straight Sets

The Panthers Remain at the Top of the ACC Standings

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team defeated Wake Forest in straight sets Friday evening at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Panthers improve to 20-6 on the year and 13-2 in conference play, leaving Pitt atop of the ACC.
Despite trailing in every set, the Panthers were still able to defeat the Demon Deacons (12-16, 4-12 ACC) in the minimum.
Three different Panthers notched double-digit kills in the match, as sophomore Nika Markovic lead the team with 17. Sophomore Layne Van Buskirk added 12, while freshman Kayla Lund finished with 11.
Lund was the only Panther to collect a double-double, as she added 10 digs to go along with her 11 kills. This is her second double-double on the season.
Junior Kamalani Akeo aided the offense with 41 assists on the match, while Stephanie Williams led the way defensively with 11 digs. At the net seven Panthers posted blocks to give Pitt a total of seven.
Set One: Pitt 28, Wake Forest 26
Pitt earned a 28-26 victory over Wake Forest after battling back from a six-point deficit. Pitt closed out the frame with a .308 hitting percentage and out-killed the Demon Deacons 20-13.
Pitt struggled early in the set, taking two early timeouts after falling behind 14-11.
The Demon Deacons would extend their lead to six, 20-14, before four straight points by Pitt prompted two timeouts by Wake Forest.
Out of the break, the Panthers would fight back to earn set point 24-23, but neither team was able to close out the set as it went into extra points.
The Demon Deacons earned two set points, both of which Pitt battled out of, giving the Panthers a chance to score three straight kills, including two by Williams, to give Pitt the first-set win.
Set Two: Pitt 25, Wake Forest 22
The Panthers extended its match lead to 2-0 after a 25-22 victory in the second set.
Pitt jumped out to an 8-5 lead at the start of the frame, however, the Demon Deacons found momentum, working its way back out in front to a 16-13 lead. The Panthers took a break to regroup and did just that as they pulled within one to force a Wake Forest timeout.
Out of the break, Pitt scored two more points to take the lead 21-20 forcing a second timeout call by the Demon Deacons. The Panthers returned to the court strong, earning set 24-21, before Lund smashed a ball to give Pitt the set.
Set Three: Pitt 25, Wake Forest 22
The Panthers would finish the sweep with a 25-22 triumph in the third set.
Pitt led 8-6 in the early points of the frame thanks to kills by Lund and Markovic. However, a 6-1 run by the Demon Deacons put Pitt behind 9-12 and once again looking to make up ground.
The Panthers would do just that as they respond with a 4-1 run, capped by a Markovic ace to even the score at 13 as Wake Forest called a timeout. However, the Demon Deacons responded with a run, scoring four straight points to force Pitt to spend a timeout of its own.
Trailing 19-16, the Panthers went on a 3-0 run to tie the game, highlighted by a tip from Williams. Pitt would outscore Wake Forest 5-2 to bring the score to 24-21, before Van Buskirk would bury a kill for the final point.

Pitt will close out its home slate against Duke Sunday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh. The Panthers will host senior night against the Blue Devils.
