Panthers Remain Tied Atop of the ACC

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team earned a season sweep against Florida State Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House, after taking down the Seminoles in straight sets.
The Panthers, who are now 19-6 overall and 12-2 in conference play, remain tied atop of the ACC with NC State and Louisville, after today's win over Florida State (12-10, 6-8 ACC).
Pitt defeated the Seminoles 25-22 in the opening set, 25-20 in the second and closed out the match with a dominating 25-18 victory in the third.
The Panthers defense was solid against a dominant Florida State team, posting 47 digs, 16 more than the Seminoles, in addition to nine team blocks.
Junior setter Kamalani Akeo led Pitt 13 digs, and earned a double-double after posting 35 assists while running the offense. At the net, freshman Chinaza Ndee blocked five balls.
Offensively, three Panthers tallied double-digit kills including redshirt sophomore Stephanie Williams (14) and sophomores Layne Van Buskirk (12) and Nika Markovic (11). Freshman Chinaza Ndee also added nine kills and hit .412 after committing just two errors in 17 attempts.
At the service line, Williams led the squad with three.
Set One: Pitt 25, Florida State 22
The Panthers opened the match with a 25-22 win over the Seminoles.
Pitt and Florida State battled through the opening points, exchanging multiple back-and-forth leads.
The Panthers found a three-point lead midway through the frame, 15-12, forcing the Seminoles to call a timeout. Out of the break, Florida State pulled within one, 17-16, but an error by the Seminoles and a Van Buskirk kill put Pitt back up by three and prompted a second timeout by Florida State.
The Panthers extended their lead to four, but took a break of their own after the Seminoles put up back-to-back points to pull within two.
Out of the timeout, Pitt earned set point on a Markovic kill and closed out the frame with one from Ndee.
Set Two: Pitt 25, Florida State 20
The Panthers found success in the second set, defeating the Seminoles 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After a close start to the set, Florida State called a timeout midway through, as the Seminoles fell behind 14-11 after three straight points. Pitt remained on top with two more points after the break to extend its run to five and its lead to 16-11.
Despite trailing by five, the Seminoles battled back in the set to tie the score 20-20, however the Panthers went out on top with a five-point run, led by Williams who posted three kills.
Set Three: Pitt 25, Florida State 18
Pitt closed out the final set with a 25-18 victory over Florida State, after holding the Seminoles to a .030 attacking percentage and just eight kills. In the frame, the Panthers posted 17 kills to hit .257.
Pitt jumped out to an early 10-5 lead, thanks to great offensive production. Florida State called a timeout to slow the Panthers but were unable to the Seminoles were forced to take their final timeout as Pitt remained out in front 14-9.
The Panthers offense continued to rack up points as back-to-back kills by Van Buskirk and Ndee made it an eight-point separation, 21-13. Pitt's defense held Florida State to just five more points, before closing out the frame.

Pitt will close out their home slate next weekend when the squad squares off with Wake Forest Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. and Duke Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh. The Panthers will host senior night against the Blue Devils.
