Four Panthers Pick Up Wins
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team suffered its fifth loss of the season after dropping a 20-16 decision to Bucknell Sunday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion.
Pitt drops to 1-5 on the year while the Bison improve to 1-4.
Despite suffering a loss, four Panthers recorded wins on the day including junior LJ Bentley at 125 pounds, senior Dom Forys at 133 pounds, redshirt sophomore Taleb Rahmani at 157 pounds and redshirt senior Ryan Solomon at heavyweight.
Bucknell claimed four-straight bouts (165, 174, 184, 197) to clinch the dual after Pitt held a 10-7 advantage at the conclusion of 157 pounds.
"We are losing these duals because we have some guys out there competing with a fear of losing," said head coach Keith Gavin. "A couple of our guys are competing with the right mentality but until our whole lineup starts to value the process instead of winning, we will continue to struggle in duals. It's an issue we identified early in the year, but it takes time and we aren't there yet."
Junior LJ Bentley got things going for the Panthers at 125 pounds, winning his first match of the year in a 3-1 decision. Bentley topped Bucknell's Jake Campbell to put Pitt out front, 3-0.
Senior Dom Forys kept the momentum going as he picked up a 14-4 major decision over Joey Gould, giving the Panthers a 7-0 lead in the dual.
At 141 pounds, redshirt senior Nick Zanetta faced a ranked opponent for the second consecutive day in No. 14 Tyler Smith. Zanetta, who ranks 16th in the weight class, dropped a hard-fought 5-2 decision to his opponent.
Another win for the Bison would tie the dual 7-7 after redshirt sophomore Alex Murray dropped a 13-5 major decision to Seth Hogue at 149 pounds.
Redshirt sophomore Taleb Rahmani brought the team score back in favor of the Panthers after a win at 157 pounds. Rahmani took down Bucknell's Christian Bassolino in a 7-2 decision for his 12th win of the year.
The Bison then claimed four-straight bouts to clinch the dual.
Redshirt senior Ryan Solomon pinned his second opponent of the weekend, as he took down Nate Feyrer in 1:46.
The Panthers resume action in the New Year when they host North Dakota State Friday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m.
