LAS VEGAS – Four Panthers reached the podium at the 36th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
A pair of redshirt seniors took sixth in their respective weight classes in Nick Zanetta at 141 pounds and Ryan Solomon at heavyweight.
Senior Dom Forys placed seventh at 133 pounds and redshirt sophomore Taleb Rahmani also took seventh at 157 pounds.
"We came here to test ourselves against some high-level competition and the trip definitely served its purpose," said head coach Keith Gavin. "This is a very tough tournament and I'm glad we decided to attend. We have some good competitors on this team and each of our guys know where they need to improve on moving forward. We will continue to work and trust the process."
Forys got the day started with a 6-1 decision over Ali Naser of Arizona State in the consolation round of eight. He then fell in the consolation quarterfinals to the No. 11 seed Austin DeSanto of Drexel in an 11-9 decision. In his final match of the weekend, Forys downed North Carolina's Zach Sherman in a 15-3 major decision to take seventh place.
Zanetta continued his winning ways in his first match of the day in the consolation round of eight, defeating Russell Rohfling of CSU-Bakersfield in a 10-6 decision. Zanetta previously lost to Rohfling two weeks ago in Bakersfield in sudden victory. In the consolation quarterfinals, Zanetta won in a 4-2 decision over Kanen Storr of Iowa State. However, Zanetta's run would fall short as he had to medical forfeit his remaining matches to take sixth place.
Rahmani opened his day by pinning West Virginia's Zach Moore in 4:55 to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. He then took on Coleman Hammond of CSU-Bakersfield, who he pinned two weeks ago in a dual meet versus CSUB, and dropped a 14-8 decision. Rahmani captured seventh place after pinning Tristan Rifanburg of Binghamton in 2:04.
Solomon also started the day strong as he defeated Columbia's Garrett Ryan in a 7-2 decision to push him to the consolation quarterfinals. He posted another win by decision, this time over Jeramy Sweany of Cornell, 8-1. In the consolation semifinals, Solomon dropped a 3-1 decision to the No. 5 seed Nathan Butler of Stanford. Solomon's run in the tournament came to an end in the fifth place match as he was stopped by Purdue's Shawn Streck again as he was pinned in 33 seconds.
The Panthers resume action Saturday, Dec. 9 for the wrestling version of the Backyard Brawl as Pitt heads to Morgantown, W.Va., to take on the Mountaineers at 2 p.m.
