Jordan Whitehead Named to Jim Thorpe Award Watch List

Pitt Safety Lands on Third Preseason Watch List Ahead of His Junior Season
PITTSBURGH—Following his selections to the watch lists for the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy, Pitt junior safety Jordan Whitehead finished the week by landing on another watch list Friday when the Jim Thorpe Award announced its preseason candidates for the nation's top defensive back.
Whitehead (Aliquippa, Pa./Central Valley) is one of 45 players the Thorpe Award deemed worthy of preseason candidacy ahead of the 2017 season, including one of just seven ACC players on the list.
In his first two seasons at Pitt, Whitehead amassed 174 total tackles, 10 passes defended, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries as a stalwart in the Panthers' secondary.
Twice an All-ACC selection at safety, Whitehead's playmaking ability has resulted in defensive touchdowns on two occasions—first with a 22-yard fumble return against Navy in the 2015 Military Bowl and also on a 59-yard interception return in Pitt's win at Virginia last fall.
