Pitt Sweeps UCSB in Home Opener

Panthers Tally Season High Offensive Numbers
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team swept UC Santa Barbara in the Panthers' home opener Friday evening at the Fitzgerald Field House.
Pitt (5-4) defeated the Gauchos (0-10) in straight sets, 25-18, 25-11 and 25-13.
The Panthers offense dominated in the match, recording a season-high .374 hitting percentage, while tallying 41 kills. Pitt also recorded a season-high nine aces.
Leading the Panthers' attack was Layne Van Buskirk who hit a career-high .909. The sophomore produced 10 kills in 11 attempts with no errors.
Adding to Pitt's offense was redshirt sophomore Stephanie Williams. She also put away 10 kills and hit .474.
From the service line, four Panthers recording two aces apiece in sophomore Kamalani Akeo, senior Mariah Bell, junior Hanna Markewycz and freshman Kayla Lund.
Defensively, libero Angela Seman tallied 15 digs, while freshman Chinaza Ndee and senior transfer Alex Rosignol each recorded four block apiece.
Set One: Pitt 25, UCSB 18
Pitt opened up with a quick 6-3 lead to start the match, but was forced to call an early timeout as UCSB caught up and tied the score 7-7. The score went back-and-forth for multiple points before the Panthers found themselves out in front 15-9 after outscoring the Gauchos 8-2.
Pitt continued to separate itself late in the match. Van Burkirk put away three kills in a row for the Panthers leading to the Gauchos' second timeout as the score read 21-14.
The home team went on to win 25-18 as Pitt tallied 18 kills and a .378 clip in the opening set.
Set Two: Pitt 25, UCSB 11
The Panthers downed UCSB easily in the second set, 25-11. Pitt tallied 11 kills and hit .375.
The Gauchos struggled in the set, tallying 12 errors in the match.
The Panthers got out in front 10-3, before UCSB called their first timeout. Seven of the Panthers' 10 points came from kills.
An eight-point run took Pitt's lead to 19-6, before the Panthers went on to win 25-11.
Set Three: Pitt 25, UCSB 13
Pitt continued to dominate in the third set, defeating the Gauchos 25-13. The Panthers hit .367 in the set while tallying 14 kills.
Pitt's defense held UCSB to a .038 clip in the set, producing 3.5 team blocks. The Gauchos only registered six kills.
The Panthers got out in front right away, taking a 13-4 lead before UCSB called their first timeout. Pitt hit the 20-point mark, before the Gauchos hit double-digits.
Leading 20-8, two straight errors by UCSB and a Lund ace put the Panthers up 23-8. The Gauchos scored four straight points to find their 12th point, but a kill by Ndee gave Pitt match point. Two straight errors by UCSB sealed the match for the Panthers.
