Pitt Earns Third Straight Sweep Against Cleveland State

Freshman Kayla Lund Leads Panthers’ Offense
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team earned its third consecutive sweep as it knocked off Cleveland State Saturday evening at the Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers (7-4) closed out the Panther Challenge with a straight sets win, downing the Vikings (7-4) 25-22, 25-19 and 25-10.
Pitt had another outstanding offensive performance as the team hit for a .330 clip and tallied 39 kills. Kayla Lund, who recorded 12 kills on 22 attempts to hit .409, led the attack. The freshman made just four hitting errors in the match.
Redshirt freshman Stephanie Williams also hit for double-digit kills, posting 10. Behind her was sophomore Layne Van Buskirk, who hit .636 after putting away seven kills in 11 attempts with no errors.
Junior Kamalani Akeo finished the match with 31 assists.
The Panthers' service game was also on point, as Pitt posted eight aces, three of which came from Lund.
Defensively, redshirt junior Angela Seman led the squad with 10 digs, while senior transfer Alex Rosignol finished with four blocks assists.
Set One: Pitt 25, Cleveland State 22
In a close opening set, the Panthers defeated Cleveland State 25-22. Pitt tallied 15 kills in the match, including four from Van Buskirk who hit .667 in the set.
The two teams opened the initial frame in a close race, but it was the Panthers who found themselves ahead. Tied 12-12, Pitt recorded three straight points on kills by Rosignol and Williams, and a block to take a 15-12 advantage and force a Vikings timeout.
Out of the break, CSU answered with the same amount to re-knot the score. The Panthers once again got ahead by three, but the Vikings repeated to tie it 19-19 force a timeout from Pitt.
The Panthers separated the score in the final points, moving ahead 23-21 on a service error by the Vikings on a kill from freshman Chinaza Ndee.
Cleveland State took another timeout and returned to score a single point, but Pitt roped off two points to end the set.
Set Two: Pitt 25, Cleveland State 19
In a back-and-forth affair to start the set, the Panthers and Vikings were knotted early on until Pitt worked its way out in front, 14-9.
Pitt outscored CSU 8-3 from when they were tied 6-6. Lund had three of the Panthers' kills during that span.
The Vikings took a timeout at that point but were unable to hold off a dominant Pitt team, who continued ahead 20-15. A second break was taken by CSU but the Vikings were only able to pull within five before the Panthers went on to take the set 25-19.
Set Three: Pitt 25, Cleveland State 10
Pitt was dominant in the third set, allowing Cleveland State to tally just 10 points total. Errors plagued the Vikings as the team had 16 offense and defensive blunders.
The Panthers were on fire at the start of the third set, going on an 11-point run to take a 12-1 lead. During the span, Cleveland State used both of their timeouts to try to stop the Panthers but was unable to find a way as Pitt registered six kills and a block.
The Vikings scored five of their 10 points in a row, midway through the set, to make it 15-7. However, Cleveland State's defense was no match for the Panthers' offense.
Pitt allowed the Vikings to score just three more points in the remainder of the match en route to a 25-10 win.
Tournament MVP / All-Tournament Team
After concluding the weekend 3-0, Pitt earned the tournament MVP and had three named to the Panther Challenge All-Tournament Team.
Williams was named MVP, while Van Buskirk, Akeo and Seman earned all-tournament honors.
