Offense Dominates in Pitt’s Victory Over Eagles

Pitt Sweeps Opening Weekend of Conference Play
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team defeated Boston College 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House to earn its second ACC win of the season.
The Panthers (9-4, 2-0 ACC) opened the match with a first set win 25-14, but fell in the second to the Eagles (3-9, 0-2 ACC) 26-24. Pitt bounced back to win the final two sets 25-12, 25-23 to take the match.
The Panthers' offense had 64 kills for the match, attacking at a .403 clip while the defense held Boston College to a .167 attacking percentage. Pitt's defense also added 15 blocks to the Eagles' six.
Four different Panthers racked up double-digit kills including sophomore Layne Van Buskirk (13-4-25, .360), senior Mariah Bell (12-4-32, .250), redshirt sophomore Stephanie Williams (12-5-26, .269), and sophomore Nika Markovic (17-0-24, .708).
Williams also contributed a team-leading 12 digs, giving her a double-double for the afternoon. Angela Seman also provided double-digit digs with 10, while Markovic added nine.
At the net, three Pitt players recorded six blocks apiece in freshman Chinaza Ndee, Van Buskirk and Markovic.
Set One: Pitt 25, Boston College 14
Pitt opened the first set with a 25-14 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Panthers were led offensively by a dominant Markovic who was almost perfect tallying six kills in seven attempts to hit .857. As a squad, Pitt hit .345 and held Boston College to just seven kills.
The Eagles controlled the tempo out of the gates, but it was the Panthers who found an early lead after swinging the momentum in their favor to take a 9-8 lead.
Boston College called its first timeout as Pitt extended its lead to 16-10 and its second just four points later as the Panthers went ahead 19-11.
Pitt outscored the Eagles 6-3 from that point to take the set.
Set Two: Boston College 26, Pitt 24
Boston College evened the match after set two, coming from behind to win 26-24. The Eagles tallied 20 kills in the match to the Panthers' 13.
Leading 8-7, Pitt posted two consecutive kills by Ndee and Bell. An error by the Eagles on the next point put the Panthers out in front 11-7 and prompted a timeout call by Boston College.
The Eagles didn't go down without a fight as they used the middle of the set to work their way back to pull within one, 20-19.
Pitt called a timeout to try and slow Boston College, but the Eagles used a five-point run to take a 21-20 lead.
Over final points, the two teams exchanged leads but Boston College came out on top 26-24.
Set Three: Pitt 25, Boston College 12
The Panthers got back on track in the third set, defeating the Eagles 25-12. Pitt hit .423 in the set after tallying 20 kills in 26 attempts, while holding Boston College to a .182 clip.
Out of intermission, the home team found its groove again on offense, taking an 11-3 lead. The Panthers tallied eight kills in its first 11 points, before extending that lead to 14-5 to force the Eagles to take their second timeout of the frame.
Pitt led by as many as 10 points throughout the set, including being up 20-10, heading into the final points.
Four of the Panthers' last five points came by way of kills.
Set Four: Pitt 25, Boston College 23
Pitt closed out the final set with a 25-23 victory over Boston College to take the match 3-1.
A four-point run early in the set by the Panthers set the momentum, giving them a 7-4 lead.
Pitt remained out in front pulling ahead 18-11, to force a Boston College timeout. Following the break, the Eagles scored four straight partially thanks to Panther errors to turn the tables and cause a Pitt timeout.
The Panthers called a second one just points later, as Boston College pulled within three, 21-18.
The Eagles continued to fight back, tying the match 23-23, but were unable to hold off Pitt as a Markovic kill and an error ended the frame.
