Panthers Post Program-Best Season-Opening Score in Loss to Oregon State

PITTSBURGH – Despite recording the highest season-opening score in program history, the University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team fell to Oregon State, 194.850-194.125, Saturday evening at the Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers final team score of 194.125 was the highest opening total since 2012, when the squad put up 193.850 in a dual meet against Maryland.
Pitt posted its best event score on floor, earning a mark of 48.950. The Panthers scored 48.700 on vault, followed closely by bars at 48.650. Pitt earned a mark of 47.825 on beam.
Pitt saw action from 12 of its gymnasts, with two Panthers collecting individual event titles. Pitt freshman Haley Brechwald won vault and tied for the all-around title. Brechwald and senior transfer Catie Conrad were also a part of a four-way tie for first on bars.
VAULT
The Panthers first event of the night was vault. Brechwald started off her Panther campaign strong, ranking as the team's top performer with a 9.825. Pitt junior Kensleigh Owens ranked second on the team, earning a career-high score of 9.775. Following Brechwald and Owens was sophomore Alecia Petrikis at 9.725 and sophomore Deven Herbine at 9.700.
Pitt held a slight edge after the first rotation, leading the Beavers, 48.725-48.700.
BARS
Next up for the Pitt squad was bars. Brechwald again performed well, earning a 9.775, which tied for the top score on the team with Conrad. Following Brechwald and Conrad was sophomore Megan Tripp, who tied her career-high at 9.750, and sophomore Lucy Jones at 9.700.
After the second rotation, Pitt continued to hold a slight edge over Oregon State, 97.350-97.225.
BEAM
Pitt moved to beam for its third rotation, where Conrad led the Panthers with a score of 9.775. Pitt junior Lucy Brett earned a 9.750 on the event, followed by Herbine at 9.700.
Oregon State surged ahead at the conclusion of the third rotation, capturing a 146.175-145.175 lead heading into the last event.
FLOOR
The Panthers closed out the meet on floor. Pitt earned their highest team score in the last rotation, edging the Beavers, 48.950-48.675, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback. Brechwald again led the Panthers with a score of 9.850. Owens and Petrikis tied for second, earning a 9.800. Following that was junior Charli Spivey at 9.775 and Conrad at 9.725.
UP NEXT
Pitt will host New Hampshire in their first EAGL meet of the season Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Field House. New Hampshire is 2-1 on the season and is coming off a conference victory against Towson.
