Graduate student Abby Edwards pitched the complete game shutout for the Panthers, allowing just four hits, one walk, while striking out five batters in 7.0 innings. Edwards retired all three batters faced over the first three innings against Prairie View.
Sarah Seamans led the Panthers throughout the day, going 3-for-7 with a homerun, two runs scored, and two RBI in two games. Bailey Drapola stole a career-high four stolen bases against Prairie View and finished the day going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and four walks.
Game One vs. Indiana
The Hoosiers got off to a hot start by scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead in bottom of the first. The Panthers answered in the second inning, starting off with Drapola drawing a walk and a Kayla Lane single to left field. Haylie Brunson advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt before Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez hit a two RBI single to right center field to make the score 3-2.
In the top of the third inning, Seamans recorded her first hit of the season with a game-tying homerun just over the left-field fence, evening the score at 3. The Hoosiers gained momentum in the third inning and capitalized on a few Pitt fielding errors to score 14 runs in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 17-3.
The Panthers recorded four straight singles and scored two runs in the fourth but could not overcome the deficit and ultimately fell to the Hoosiers 17-5.
Game Two vs. Prairie View
The second game of the day looked to be a pitcher's duel as Edwards and Prairie View starting pitcher Breanna Reyna each retired the first three batters. Efficient baserunning from Drapola got the Panthers on the board as the senior stole second, and then third after drawing a walk. Drapola scored on an error to break the scoreless tie in the second inning.
Junior Cami Compson hit just her second career triple to make the score 4-0, scoring Seamans and Kat Rodriguez in the top of the fifth. Seamans drove in Kylie Griggs for Pitt's final run of the day and to make the score 5-0.
UP NEXT
The Panthers continue their opening weekend Saturday with a double header against No. 21 Auburn at 11 a.m. and will face off against No. 20 Kentucky at 4 p.m. at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
