Pitt Drops Hard-Fought Game to Illinois in Extra Innings

Abby Edwards Tosses 8.1 Innings of One-Run Ball
HOUSTON – Pitt held Illinois scoreless for nine innings but ultimately dropped a 2-1 decision to the Fighting Illini in an 11-inning contest at the Cougar Softball Stadium, Sunday morning. The Panthers finish the weekend with a 4-1 record at the University of Houston Tournament and fall to 10-4 overall on the season.
Graduate student Abby Edwards took the mound in the third inning and held the Illinois batters to just three hits heading into the 11th inning. Edwards finished the day allowing just one earned run on three hits and four strikeouts, over a season high 8.1 innings.
The Fighting Illini struck first with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Graduate student Sarah Seamans (2-for-5, R, RBI) hit her fourth game-tying home run of the season with a solo shot to center field with two outs in the third inning to even the score at 1-1.
The Panthers and Fighting Illini combined for just three hits and did not score a run over 7.0 innings. Kelly Ryono drove in the winning run for Illinois on a single down the right field line.
Sydney Sickels (6-0) tossed all 11 innings for Illinois, giving up just one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Pitt returns to the diamond March 3-5 at the Thundering Herd Round Robin, hosted by Marshall. The Panthers open play with a double header against Morehead State (March 3 – 10 a.m.) and Marshall (March 3 – 12:30 p.m.).
