PITTSBURGH – Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez hit a game-tying home run in the fifth inning, but the Panthers could not overcome a late rally by the Cavaliers and ultimately fell 4-2 at Vartabedian Field Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Macy Hamilton (2-for-3) and junior Cami Compson (2-for-3) both led the Panthers lineup with two hits each. Ramirez finished the day going 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Panthers' defense was flashing the leather early, picking up two double plays in the first three frames. Kat Rodriguez (1-for-2) got the force out at second base and beat Sarah Coon out at first in the opening inning of play. Hamilton assisted on another double play in the third inning with a lineout to center field and pick off at second base.
After being held to three hits over the first four innings, the Panthers fought back from the 1-0 deficit with a leadoff game-tying home run from Ramirez to left center, her first homer of the season. The Panthers took the lead after Whaley drove home Hamilton on a single to center field.
Pitt got into scoring position in the bottom of the sixth from a Rodriguez sacrifice bunt, but the Panthers were halted when Virginia pitcher Eden Bigham enter the circle and ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
Virginia scored a run in the sixth inning and two more runs in the seventh inning to secure the win. Bigham earned the win for the second day in a row for the Cavaliers, retiring all six batters faced in 2.0 innings.
Dani Drogemuller held the Cavaliers to just four hits over the first five frames but was credited with the loss after tossing a total of 7.0 innings with six strikeouts, while allowing four runs on nine hits.
