PITTSBURGH—Sophomore Veronica Lee was named the Pitt Performer of the Meet after leading the University of Pittsburgh women’s swimming and diving team to victories over California (Pa.), Carnegie Mellon, Clarion and Grove City at Trees Pool Saturday afternoon. The Panthers moved to 8-6 in dual meet competition this season.
“Our women showed their depth and strength in all of their events today,” head coach Chuck Knoles said. “Despite swimming in events they don’t typically compete in, we won every race. That is quite an accomplishment on any level of competition. The team is looking forward to the Big East Championship over the next two weeks.”
Lee won three individual events in the meet. She touched for first in the 200 fly (2:07.24), 200 breast (2:19.44) and 200 IM (2:06.84). Lee held a five-second advantage over the second-place finisher in the 200 breast.
Lee was also the second leg of the 200 medley relay team that captured first (1:47.05). The squad was made up of junior Joanna Budzis, Lee, senior Tamara Lelli and freshman Jessica Nederlanden.
In individual events, Nederlanden won the 100 back (59.44) and Budzis claimed a meet crown in two others. She touched for first in the 100 fly (58.88) and tied junior Kelsey Herbst as the winners of the 50 free (24.47).
Herbst was the first Panther to the wall in the 100 free (52.63), while freshman Cam Dixon
was second (53.44). In another freestyle event, junior Yolandi Van Der Merwe
won the 200 free (1:54.34) and Lelli finished third (1:55.21). Freshman Tatyanna Sarjeant
captured first in both the 500 (5:06.87) and 1,000 free (10:29.75). Placing second in those events was freshman Emily Bolek
A pair of freshman went first and second in the 200 back, as Kelsey Williams won the event (2:07.54) and Brooke Waugaman followed Williams to the wall.
Freshman Dani des Tombe won the 100 breast (1:07.45), while sophomores Lauren Matevish placed second in the 200 fly (2:08.91) and 200 IM (2:12.08).
The 200 free relay team of des Tombe, Sarjeant, freshman Lauren Mills and Budzis won the race at 1:36.56.
In diving action, the Panthers swept the 1M board. Sophomore Tori Brungo won the event (259.55) and junior Brittany DiSanti and sophomore Kimberly Ciotti rounded out the top three.
In the 3M event, freshman Angelika McGhee claimed first with 249.20 points. DiSanti trailed for second with 244.45 points.
The Panthers will host the Big East Championship at Trees Pool, beginning on Feb. 10. Diving events are set for Feb. 10-12. Swimming is scheduled for Feb. 15-18.
