PITTSBURGH—Junior Cookie McIntyre was named Pitt Performer of the Meet, as the University of Pittsburgh women’s swimming and diving team earned victories over Carnegie Mellon (194-94) and California (Pa.) (190-70), this afternoon, in its regular-season finale at Trees Pool. The Panthers improved to 7-5 on the season and honored seniors Sophie Cross, Margo Ekstrom, Alyssa Ferraro, Allie Horvath, Ryann Kishbaugh, Tiffany Malatesta, Beth Newell and Sara Sullivan.
McIntyre had a great meet, claiming first in an individual event and as a member of a relay, and finished second in another event. Her first place finish was in the 100 fly, where the Panthers swept the event. McIntyre recorded a time of 57.18, while Cross and Malatesta took second and third, respectively, in the event.
As a member of Pitt’s 200 medley relay team, McIntyre joined freshman Joanna Budzis and sophomores Yolandi Van Rooyen and Elena Spak for a first-place, ECAC finish of 1:46.24 in the first swimming event of the day.
Earlier, in the first of three events the Panthers swept on the day, sophomore
Tamara Lelli won the 200 free (1:53.20). Trailing, McIntyre claimed second and freshman
Kelsey Herbst was third. All three qualified for the ECAC Championships with those swims. Later, Lelli would win the 500 free (5:05.75).
Next, Horvath and Cross went first and second, respectively, in the 100 back. Each fell below the ECAC standard. Horvath was also second in the 100 free (53.57).
In the 1000 free, junior Katie Cutrell touched for first with an ECAC automatic time of 10:28.69. Her finish was nearly 50 seconds faster than the California swimmer that took second.
Kishbaugh won two individual events, claiming titles in the 200 fly (2:07.13) and 200 IM (2:12.66).
Winning their events with ECAC marks, junior Laura Barnes was first in the 100 breast at 1:06.70 and freshman Yolandi Van Der Merwe claimed the 200 breast title (2:21.64).
Newell also qualified for the ECACs in the 200 back (2:12.17)
The Panthers will host the Big East Diving Championships from Friday, Feb. 12, through Sunday, Feb. 14. The conference swim meet will be held at Trees Pool from Wednesday, Feb. 17, through Saturday, Feb. 20.
