GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Pittsburgh diving team impressed in the first round of competition at the Greensboro Aquatic Center on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Tony Galante impressed on the 3M board for the Panthers with a season best score of 344.75. Galante's stand out performance is a promising start of the championship season as he wraps up ACCs and looks to NCAA Diving Zones. He finished 12th overall in prelims.
Sophomore Samantha Winkelmann and Rachel Saunders represented for the women's side, both recording top-20 finishes on the 1M board. Winkelmann scored a 267.75 on the 1M, marking the Panthers fourth best performance of the season. Saunders recorded a 260.20, posting the sixth best score this year.
Senior Veronica Lee highlighted tonight's competition by setting a season best record in the 200 IM finals with a time 2:01.46. Lee also posted the Panthers second fastest time of the season in the prelims of the 200 IM (2:02.16).
Sophomore Kaleigh Ritter finished 13th overall in the 500 free with a recorded time of 4:46.99. Ritter swam the top time of the season. Also in that event, senior Lauren Matevish achieved her second best time of the season by going 4:52.65, scoring points for Pitt and tying in 21st.
Other highly notable performances, Jessica Nederlanden achieved a lifetime best swim in the 50 free (23.46), followed closely by teammate Melissa Pocsai (23.51) who posted the second best time for Pitt.
Individually, Lauren Mills swam her way to a season best, swimming her fastest time yet this season in the 50 free (23.55).
