PITTSBURGH--Junior Kristen McMullan earned two ECAC crowns this weekend, as Pitt's women's swimming and diving team finished fifth with 308.5 points, competing with a limited amount of participants.
McMullan won the 50 free at 23.33, and then claimed first in the 100 free at 51.40.
Trailing her slightly, senior Tiffany Malatesta was second in the 50 free (23.82). Later, Malatesta would turn in a career best of 56.99 in the 100 back, placing fifth in that event. She also finished seventh in the 100 free (52.26).
Malatesta was also a member of Pitt's fourth-place 200 medley relay team. The Panthers combined for a time of 1:47.97 and included senior Beth Newell, junior Cookie McIntyre, senior Sara Sullivan and Malatesta.
An individual third-place performance was turned in by freshman Joanna Budzis. She stopped the clock at 2:00.15 in the finals of the 200 back.
With four members of the squad competing in the 100 fly, McIntyre turned in the highest Pitt finish. She placed third with a personal best of 56.02. Following her in fourth was sophomore Tamara Lelli (56.10), while McMullan touched for fifth (56.33) and junior Caitlin Trant was sixth (56.71).
Lelli would also place fifth in the 200 fly (2:05.11) during the meet.
In another fifth-place performance, freshmen Tori Alland went 1:53.53 in the 200 free, while freshman Yolandi Van Der Merwe followed her for sixth overall (1:53.71). Van der Merwe swam in the finals of the 200 breast, where she finished eighth at 2:23.03.
Also competing in the finals, senior Alyssa Ferraro finished second in the 1M board (276.25), while senior Lisa McDonnell was fourth in the 50 free (24.08) and junior Laura Barnes was eighth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:06.08.
The women's NCAA Championships begin March 18 in West Lafayette, Ind.
