PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving team hosted its annual Blue-Gold meet Friday with Gold capturing a 166-104 win at Joe C. Trees Pool.
In the first swimming event of the meet, Blue's 200 medley relay team touched the wall at 1:51.29 for first place. The squad consisted of freshmen Renee Deschenes, Sarah Zetlmeisl, Kelsey Williams and Cam Dixon.
The Gold team turned in a second-place performance at one minute and 52 seconds flat. Sophomore Kate Dunseith, junior Yolandi Van Der Merwe, sophomore Veronica Lee and junior Kelsey Herbst combined on that team.
Gold scored 13 more points in the 200 free as freshman Dani des Tombe won the 200 free at 1:54.78 and Herbst placed second at 1:54.90. des Tombe would also touch for first in the 50 free with a finish of 24.80, while Herbst was the victor in the 500 free (5:00.17).
Lee won the 100 breast (1:06.89) and freshman Emily Bolek led all in the 200 fly (2:06.22) to direct Gold to wins in back-to-back events. Lee would add another top finish in the 100 fly (57.59), while Bolek placed second in that event.
In another first-place performance for Gold, Van der Mewre would also win the 200 breast (2:26.39), while freshman Tatyanna Sarjeant won the 200 IM (2:10.12) and 200 back (2:04.89).
Swimming for the Blue team, junior Joanna Budzis captured the 100 back with a time of 57.84. Williams finished third to tack on another three points for the squad. Budzis won the 100 free at 54.21.
Pitt begins its 2011-12 season on Friday, Oct. 21, at Buffalo. Diving begins at 5 p.m.
