INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The University of Pittsburgh Swimming and Diving team is headed to Indianapolis, Ind. this week for the 2013 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet will take place at Indiana University Natatorium beginning Wed. Feb. 27th and ending Sat. March 2nd. Action is set to begin at Noon on Wednesday.
At last year's meet, the men's team placed third overall while the women finished fourth.
Divers to Watch:
Junior Aaron Snyder currently holds Pitt's top scores in the 1M and 3M boards. Snyder posted a 381.68 on the 1M and a 367.95 on the 3M at Villanova in late January. Both scores are career-high's. Snyder finished second overall in the 1M at last year's championship meet.
Male Swimmers to Watch:
Junior Adam Maczewski currently ranks first in the Big East in the 100 back and fourth in the 200 back among Big East swimmers. Last year at the Big East Championships, Maczewski captured All-Big East honors with a second place finish in the 200 back. He also set two school records in the 50 and 100 back.
Sophomore Kourosh Ahani enters the championship meet with his eyes set on the 100 fly title. He currently ranks second in the league with a time of 48.29 which he posted at the Pitt Invitational. At the 2012 Big East Championships, Ahani garnered All-Big East honors in the 100 fly.
Freshmen David Sweeney Jr. and Mack Rice look to make a splash at their first ever championship meet. Sweeney Jr. posted Pitt's top times in the 50, 100, 200 and 1,000 yard freestyle events this season, and is currently ranked fifth in the 200 free. Rice is the Panthers 200 IM school record holder and will enter that event ranked fifth.
Jon Lierley, a sophomore, ranks fourth in the Big East in the 200 fly. He currently holds the school record in the event which he broke at last year's Big East Championships and placed fourth overall.
Women Swimmers to Watch:
Senior Kelsey Herbst will lead the way for the women's team as she is ranked in four events in the Big East. Herbst is ranked third in the 500 and 1000 free, fourth in the 1650 free, and sixth in the 200 free. At last year's Big East Championships, Herbst placed sixth in the 500 free and set the school record in that event.
Also standing out for the women is senior Joanna Budzis. In the Big East ranking, she holds fourth place in the 200 IM and fifth in the 400 IM. Last season, Budzis claimed fifth in the 200 IM at the Big East Championship meet. For Pitt, she currently holds four individual school records (50 and 100 back, 200 and 400 IM). She set the school record in the 400 IM at last year's Big East Championships.
Both the men and women rank second in the 200 free, 200 medley and 400 free relay events, while the men are second in the 400 medley and the women are third.
