INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After her school record breaking performance in the 1650 freestyle at the Big East Championship Meet, Kelsey Herbst has made the cut and will swim at the NCAA Championship Meet, announced on Thursday evening.
Herbst ranks 38th heading into the championships meet which will be swam on March 21-23 at the Indiana University Natatorium. The senior placed second at the Big East Championship Meet with a time of 16:20.78 and broke Sue Heon’s record which had been the record for 27 years.
The NCAA Championship Meet is the culmination of an outstanding career for Herbst at Pitt. She will graduate as the school record holder in the 500 and the 1650 freestyle events, and also as a member of the 800 freestyle relay team. All three of her record times were set last weekend at Big East.
In the 2012-13 season, Herbst posted the team’s fastest times in the 500, 1000 and the 1650 freestyle events, and had first place finishes in 11 individual events throughout the year.
“Kelsey’s great work ethic – especially this in her senior year, has paid off tremendously,” head coach Chuck Knoles said. “When she broke Pitt Olympian Sue Heon’s school record in the 1650 at Big East, we knew she had a shot of being invited to the NCAA meet. We are very proud of her.”
