March 14, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Sophomore Kourosh Ahani will represent the University of Pittsburgh men’s swimming and diving team at the NCAA National Championship Meet as he qualified to swim the 100 yard butterfly.
Ahani’s school-record time of 46.74 which he achieved two weeks ago at the Big East Championship Meet has him seeded 29th in the event. Ahani was crowned Big East Champion in the 100 fly and he has never lost that race since he has been at Pitt.
This will be Ahani’s first NCAA Championship Meet and he is the only swimmer from the Big East to be entered in the 100 fly. Thomas Shields of California brings the nation’s top time into the event at 44.92.
Following the meet which is scheduled to run from March 28-30 at the Indiana University Natatorium, Ahani will fly to Victoria, British Columbia, to swim in the Canadian World Trials Meet.
Ahani joins Kelsey Herbst from the women’s team who qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet. Herbst will swim the 500 and the 1650 yard freestyle events at the women’s championship meet which is scheduled for March 21-23, also at the IU Natatorium.
