INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - University of Pittsburgh senior Kelsey Herbst will swim in both the 500 and the 1650 yard freestyle events this weekend at the 2012-13 NCAA Women’s Championship Meet at the IU Natatorium.
Herbst qualified for the 1650, but because she also achieved an NCAA ‘B’ cut in the 500, she is eligible to swim that event too. The prelims of the 500 yard freestyle will begin on Thursday morning at 11 a.m.
Herbst currently ranks 38th nationally in the 1650. The Erie, Pa. native had a dominating senior campaign, finishing first in the 500 freestyle five times, the 1000 twice, and the 1650 the only time she swam in the event. In total, she has amassed 11 individual first place finishes this season, the most of any swimmer on the team. In addition to her impressive wins total, she holds school records in the 500 (4:45.82), 1000 (9:55.38), and 1650 freestyle (16:20.38), all of which were recorded this season.
The finals of the 1650 are scheduled to begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. Herbst is one of only two swimmers from the Big East in the 1650 and one of six in the 500.
