CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Several members of the men's swimming and diving team competed at the Charlotte UltraSwim Grand Prix, earlier this month. Those competing in the event were swimming for their respective club teams, and swam against several Olympians including Michael Phelps, Aaron Piersol and Eric Shanteau.
Recording a solid finish for their club team was a seventh-place performance by the 400 medley relay team of junior Bobby Smith, alum Warren Barnes, senior Geoff Morgan and sophomore Jake Lucas, who stopped the clock at 3:54.68.
The 400 free relay team of Lucas, senior Alex Kubicek, Morgan and Smith recorded and 11th-place time of 3:36.91 for their club.
Individually, the most all-around performance of the day came from Barnes (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton), as he placed in the top 10 three times. His fifth-place finish in the 200 breast was the best of day for the club, turning in a time of 2:19.43. Barnes also placed sixth in the 100 breast (1:03.59) and eighth in the 200 breast.
Competing in four events, Lucas (Richmond, Va./Liberty) placed in the top 20 of the 100 fly, with a time of 55.99. In the 50 and 100 free events, he stopped the clock at 24.50 and 52.48, respectively. Additionally, Lucas clocked in at 1:01.70 during the 100 back event, placing 49th in prelims.
Senior Jonathan Buchanan (Beavercreek, Ohio /Beavercreek) aided his club with a 34th-place finish in the 200 IM. He also swam the 400 free (4:15.66) also competed in the 400 IM (4:44.74).
Also swimming in the prelims of three events, Morgan
(Cornwall, N.Y. /Cornwall Central) turned in his best performance in the 100 breast, where he clocked in at 1:10.47 for 38th overall. Morgan also swam in the 100 fly (58.04) and the 200 fly (2:15.14).
Smith (Coplague, N.Y. /Pacific) competed in the 100 and 200 backstroke events where he placed in the top 40 for both. He also swam in the 50 free, recording a time of 25.07.
The final individual performer was Kubicek (Monroeville, Pa. /Gateway). He swam a 24.88 in the 50 free for 57thoverall. Additionally, he competed in the 100 free (55.05) and the 100 fly.
