PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving head coach Chuck Knoles announced the Panthers’ 2012-13 schedule, which includes three tournaments held at Joe C. Trees Pool.
“This year’s schedule features several top-ranked opponents,” Knoles said. “We want to challenge our team and prepare them for strong competition in the post season. Our goal is win the Big East Championship and advance to the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis.”
Pitt opens its season with its annual Blue/Gold intrasquad meet at Trees Pool on Friday, Oct. 12. Regular-season action begins on Saturday, Oct. 20 when the Panthers host St. Bonaventure.
Pitt will also entertain future ACC opponent Virginia on Sunday, Oct. 28. The Cavaliers finished among the top 20 at the NCAA Championships on both the men’s and women’s side. Virginia’s men won their 15th ACC crown, while the women grabbed their 10th during the 2011-12 season.
The Panthers travel to Cincinnati for the start of Big East play on Saturday, Nov. 3 and less than a week later face Notre Dame on Friday, Nov. 9 in South Bend, Ind. The Irish men won the Big East title last season, while the women finished second overall.
The Pitt Invitational at Trees Poll will feature West Virginia, West Virginia Wesleyan and James Madison from Nov. 16-18. The Panthers will compete in the USA Swimming sanctioned AT&T Winter Nationals in Austin, Texas on Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
Action at Trees Pool resumes on Dec. 13-15 with the 51st annual Christmas Meet. Following the holiday break, Pitt will host ‘Backyard Brawl Rival’ WVU on Saturday, Jan. 12. The Panthers close the month at Villanova for a two-day meet Jan. 25-26.
Pitt will then celebrate its seniors on Feb. 2 as the Panthers host Clarion, Carnegie Mellon, California (Pa.) and Grove City at Trees Pool for their final home meet of the season.
Prior to post-season competition, the squad will hold the Panther Prep Swimvitational at Trees Pool Feb. 15-16.
Pitt will then contend for the Big East Championship from Feb. 27-March 2 in Indianapolis. The conference championship will be held at IUPUI Natatorium, which will also serve was the home of the 2013 NCAA Championships.
“We are at a huge advantage having an opportunity to swim at the IUPUI Natatorium for the Big East Championship, prior to the NCAA Championship,” Knoles added. “We were also fortunate to take some of our student-athletes to the Indy Grand Prix this past March. Our team will be familiar with the IUPUI Natatorium. It gives them a tangible goal to focus on.”
Following the conference meet, Pitt will travel to Piscataway, N.J. for the Zone Diving Championship at Rutgers March 15-17. NCAA Championship action will be held March 21-23 (women) and March 28-30 (men) in Indianapolis.
