AUSTIN, Texas - Five men and five women from the University of Pittsburgh swimming teams will represent the Panthers this weekend at the USA Swimming AT&T Winter National Championships hosted by the University of Texas.
Not just limited to NCAA participants, Pitt will be swimming against some of the top talent in the world, including Olympic gold medalists Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky, along with the top high school and club swimmers in the country.
The Pitt student-athletes swimming this weekend for the men are: Kourosh Ahani, Jon Lierley, Adam Maczewski, Mack Rice and David Sweeney Jr., while the five women heading to Austin include: Joanna Budzis, Dani des Tombe, Renee Deschenes, Kelsey Herbst and Veronica Lee.
Maczewski headlines the field for Pitt as he enters the meet with the second fastest collegiate time this season in the 100 Yard Backstroke. He is seeded 15th overall in the 100 Back, and seeded 21st in the 200 Back.
Rice, who owns the 14th fastest time nationally in the 200 IM, and who is coming off his school record performance at the Pitt Invitational, is seeded 26th in that event, while Budzis is 26th on the women's side.
Ahani will enter the 100 Yard Butterfly seeded 10th overall, while Lierley will be eighth in the 200 Yard Fly. Relays for the men include the 4x50 Free (seeded seventh), the 4x100 Medley (seeded eighth) and the 4x50 Medley (seeded eighth).
Herbst is seeded 20th in the 500 Yard Freestyle, Lee is 29th in the 200 Yard Breaststroke and des Tombe is 29th in the 50 Yard Freestyle.
Action at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center is set to begin Thursday morning, Nov. 29th, and will conclude on Saturday, December 1st.
