April 8, 2017Pitt Picks Up Wins in Four Events
PITTSBURGH – The Pitt track and field teams picked up a combined four wins at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla., and the George Mason Spring Invitational in Fairfax, Va., Saturday.
Junior Laila Ismail posted a personal-record time of 59.32 en route to her win in the 400m hurdles at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational. It was the second individual victory of her career, and her first since she won the same event at the Campbell/Wright Open on May 7, 2016.
Ismail was also part of the Panthers’ winning 4x400m relay team, which recorded a season-best time of 3:35.51. Morgan Harvey, Quadaisha Newkirk and Desiree Garland rounded out the squad. Their time is good for 15th place in the nation.
The final wins for Pitt came from junior Andin Fosam and senior Desmond Palmer, who claimed the women’s hammer throw and men’s 400m hurdles, respectively. Fosam won her event for the second consecutive meet with a toss of 58.46m at the George Mason Spring Invitational, and Palmer posted a time of 49.85 in his victory at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, moving him into fourth place in the nation.

Hurricane Alumni Invitational:
The women picked up 17 personal records across six events. Notable top finishers for Pitt included Danielle Leaks (100m – third, 11.77, PR; 200m – eighth, 24.06, PR), Quadaisha Newkirk (400m – fourth, 53.87), Taylor Middleton (long jump – fourth, 5.73m, PR; triple jump – second, 12.18m), and Paige Lumley (heptathlon – fifth, 4,720 points, PR).
In addition to the women’s 4x400m relay team, the 4x100m squad posted a season-best time. Genaya Johnson, Whitney Martin, Lysaih Rice and Leaks finished third at 45.43.
On the men’s side, freshman Jabari Michael-Khensu posted personal records and top season times for Pitt in the 100m (10.85) and 200m (21.43). Jamaree Murray had a personal record in the 400m at 47.78 and finished seventh. Freshman Dante Watson recorded a runner-up finish in the 800m at 1:51.83. In addition to his 400m hurdles performance, Palmer had another top-five finish in the 110m hurdles, placing fourth at 13.97. Chris Spadaro finished fifth in the long jump (7.03m) and fourth in the triple jump (14.74m), which was a season-best mark for the senior.
The men’s 4x100m relay team, comprised of Michael-Khensu, Murray, Joshua McDonald and Spadaro raced to a season-best time of 41.02 and finished fifth while the 4x400m relay team of Brylan Slay, Watson, McDonald and Murray took second at 3:11.00.
George Mason Spring Invitational:
The women had 13 personal record performances, as well as three individual season-best marks. Top finishers for Pitt included Miranda Salvo in the 800m (eighth, 2:10.45, PR), Beth Shenck in the 1500m (11th, 4:35.00, PR), Dee Dee Adams in the 5000m (14th, 17:40.57, season best), Karli O’Neill in the 3000m steeplechase (second, 11:09.35), Kailyn Clancy in shot put (sixth, 13.19m), Jessie Wallace in discus (10th, 41.12m, season best) and Sydney Alderman in javelin (third, 42.17, PR).
For the men, the Panthers had four personal records in the 1500m race and one in the 5000m. Nate Sloan led the way for Pitt in the 1500m, finishing 12th with a PR of 3:49.36. Joe Mundell (18th, 13.97m) and Robert Quinby (13th, 48.08m) represented Pitt in shot put and javelin, respectively.
Pitt will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Louisville Invitational Friday and Saturday, April 14-15.
