ATLANTA - Senior Desmond Palmer and sophomore Gillian Schriever garnered All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team honors for the Pitt track and field teams at the league's Outdoor Championships at George C. Griffin Field Sunday.
Palmer, the Panthers' star hurdler in the 110m and 400m, was runner-up and earned first team accolades in both events. Already the most decorated ACC student-athlete in school history, Palmer raised his individual event honors to six for his outdoor career. In the 110m hurdles, Palmer repeated as runner-up at 13.74. In the 400m hurdles, the Pickerington, Ohio, native was runner-up at 49.17, behind the NCAA-leading mark of 48.76 set by Kenny Selmon of North Carolina. Palmer's mark ranks No. 5 in the nation.
In the women's 5000m race, Schriever made an impressive finish, improving from sixth place to third place on the final lap. She grabbed the bronze medal and landed on the All-ACC first team for the first time in her career with an outdoor personal record of 16:12.45. Last season, the Tuckerton, N.J., native finished fourth in the same event at 16:43.38, earning second team honors.
Others picking up points for Pitt included Nate Sloan (men's 1500m), Desiree Garland (women's 400m) and freshman Jabari Michael-Khensu (men's 200m). Sloan earned two points with a seventh-place finish at 3:48.23. Garland also placed seventh, collecting two points at 53.86. Michael-Khensu finished eighth and earned the first point of his college career with a personal record of 21.17.
In the women's triple jump, freshman Taylor Middleton leaped to an outdoor personal best mark of 12.23 and finished 13th. Classmate Nick Wolk represented the Panthers in the men's 5000m race and finished in 23rd at 14:55.18.
The Panthers' relay teams all scored points, with three out of four squads placing fourth.
The women's 4x100m team of Genaya Johnson, Danielle Leaks, Whitney Martin and Alyssa Wise won their heat and placed fifth overall at 45.63. The men's 4x100m team of Michael-Khensu, Jamaree Murray, Josh McDonald and Chris Spadaro narrowly missed the podium, coming in fourth at 41.09.
In the women's 4x400m race, Pitt's team of Morgan Harvey, Quadaisha Newkirk, Leaks and Garland placed fourth with a season-best time of 3:34.58. The men's 4x400m team was off the podium by a hundredth of a second, as Brylan Slay, Murray, Dante Watson and Palmer placed fourth with a season-best mark of 3:06.41.
Panthers who meet qualifying marks will travel to Lexington, Ky., for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds May 25-27.
