Spratling Breaks 400 School Record; Panthers Perform Well at USA Nationals

DES MOINES, Iowa - Junior Brycen Spratling broke his own school record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 45.71, and all four Pitt participants advanced in their respective events at the USA National Championship Meet at Drake Stadium.

"I'm really proud of the performances of our athletes in both the Junior and the Senior meet this weekend," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "They were competing and advancing to the semifinals and the finals against not only the best that the NCAA has to offer, but some of the best athletes in the entire world - many of whom will be representing USA in the next Olympic Games."

Spratling reached the semifinals of the 400 by posting a 45.97 in the opening round, which placed him third in his heat. In the semis, the Webster, N.Y. native broke his previous school record of 45.94 by running a lifetime best of 45.71. He placed sixth in his heat and finished 11th overall.

Carvin Nkanata reached the semifinals of the 200 meter dash by running 20.41 in the opening round of the competition, and then ran a 20.90 in the semifinals and was 6th in his heat. He finished tied for 11th overall. Tyson Gay won the event in a time of 19.74.

In the junior competition, Evann Thompson won her semifinal heat of the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.33, which was 4th heading into the finals. She then posted a 59.12 in the finals and finished sixth overall.

In the junior men's 400 meter hurdles, Dustin Fuller also qualified for the finals as he was second in his heat with a time of 53.83; his second best time of the season. In that same heat, incoming freshman Desmond Palmer placed third with a time of 53.87 but did not qualify for the finals. Fuller then ran a time of 55.18 in the finals which placed him 8th overall.

At the Canadian National Championship Meet, Andrew Wells placed 5th in the discus with a throw of 51.93m. Wells set the school record his season in both the discus and the hammer throw.

 

 

This was the final meet of the season for the Panthers. They will resume action in the winter of 2013 when the indoor season begins.
