GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh’s track and field sprinter Carvin Nkanata has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Male Performer of the Week for a record-breaking performance at the Nittany Lion Challenge.
Nkanata highlighted the competition in the 400-meter dash, breaking the meet record and matching the current NCAA top time of 46.36. Nkanata set a season best en route to finishing first in the 400-meter.
The Summersville, S.C., native was five-tenths of a second off his personal best time of 46.31 set in 2013 at the SPIRE Invitational.
“Carvin has been more focused because it’s his senior year,” head coach Alonzo Webb said. “He’s been really focused on all the little things, and has done everything that has been asked of him. He’s really been working hard and putting in the extra time. I’m not surprised with his latest performance and we expect that from him, because he’s one of the top sprinters in the country returning from last year.
“For Carvin to get this award, it means a lot to him and it will motivate him even more. It’s really exciting to see where he’s at right now in his career and I couldn’t be happier for him.”
The Panthers will be on the road next weekend to compete at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. and at the YSU Invitational in Youngstown, Ohio on January 24.
