Panthers Travel to Virginia Tech Elite, YSU National and Armory Invite

Feb. 7, 2014

Blacksburg, Va. - The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's track teams look to continue the momentum they built last weekend as they head to the Virginia Tech Elite Meet, YSU National and Armory Collegiate Invitational.

The Panthers will compete at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet with 28 participants for the two-day competition. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday and at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The Panthers will also be making the trip for a second time this season to Youngstown State, Ohio and Blacksburg, Va. The YSU National competition is a two-day competition on Friday and Saturday. Assistant Coach Jim Lear will be traveling with 32 participants to compete in the sprints, distance and jumps events.

The Panthers are coming off a successful weekend at the PSU National Invite after breaking two school records from Taranisha Taylor and Carvin Nkanata. Taylor's most impressive feat so far this season was in the 60m hurdles where she broke the school record with a time of 8.32.

Nkanata also set a new school record en route to claiming first in the 200m dash with a time of 20.99 at the same meet. His performance ranks him at the nation's top time list in the men's 200M. Both Taylor and Nkanata will look to again turn in solid showings at the Armory Invite.

The ACC Male Player of the Week, Brycen Spratling, will also be traveling to New York this weekend. Spratling currently ranks seventh nationally in the 400m after finishing in first-place with an ACC Championship qualifying time of 46.32. He also anchored the Pitt men's 4x4 first-place relay team, which now ranks sixth nationally.

The 4x4 team of Micah Murray, Nkanata, Desmond Palmer and Spratling will again compete at this weekend's Armory Invite. Head Coach Alonzo Webb is taking eight student-athletes to compete in the two-day meet, which also includes Zoey Whittington, Brylan Slay and Evann Thompson.
