PITTSBURGH- The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's track and field team is sending four student-athletes to compete in the 2014 USATF Indoor Championships this weekend. The championships are being held Friday, February 21 through Sunday, February 23 at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Panthers are sending senior sprinters Brycen Spratling and Micah Murray to race in the 400M dash along with Taranisha Taylor, who will run the 60M hurdles, and Ashley Corum, who will participate in the women's triple jump.
After running the nation's second fastest time of 45.57 in the 400M last week at the SPIRE Invitational, Brycen Spratling headlines the list of 20 competitors in this year's field. Spratling's time is almost a full second ahead of the next fastest qualifying time of 46.46 posted by Clayton Parros, a recent graduate of North Carolina.
Fellow running-mate Micah Murray, a local product of Penn Hills High School in Pittsburgh, has a qualifying time of 46.65 which ranks him sixth in this year's lineup. That time is Murray's personal-best and he will look to improve upon it this weekend and join Spratling on the medal podium.
For the women, sophomore Taranisha Taylor will look to add to her already impressive resume by competing in the 60M hurdles this weekend. Taylor will look to best her qualifying time of 8.32, which she posted at the PSU National Invite, and catch top hurdlers Candice Price, 29 and USC Trojan alum (8.00), Nia Ali, another former Trojan (8.02) and Kristi Castlin who graduated from Virginia Tech (8.02). Ali and Castlin are both currently affiliated with Nike.
Senior Ashley Corum of Carlisle, Pa. will compete in the triple jump on Sunday where she too will look to contend for a spot on the podium. Corum's qualifying score of 12.88M is good for seventh best amongst her competition. She will aim to catch Amanda Shock of the New York Athletic Club who enters the championships with a score of 13.61M.
