PITTSBURGH -- Pitt cross country did not have far to go to compete in its first meet of the year, racing in the Duquesne Duals at Schenley Park on Saturday morning. The men's squad, led by Richard Addison, went 4-1 against opponents, while lead female runner Hillary Boxheimer and the Pitt women went 2-1.
Addison placed fifth overall with an eight-kilometer time of 26:25.9. That was an improvement from his finish at the meet last year in which he placed 13th and was nearly one minute slower. He was joined in the top 10 on Saturday by teammates Cullen Davis (26:34.8) and Michael Runco (26:38.1), who were eighth and ninth, respectively.
With three in the top 10 and each of their seven scorers in the top 20, the Panthers earned wins over Robert Morris, Carnegie Mellon, Youngstown State and St. Vincent. The lone loss came to Duquesne, which earned each of the top four places with the win going to Bob Gasior in 26:07.
Boxheimer was Pitt's leader on the women's side. She placed 10th overall with a 5K time of 18:57.8. The lone Panther to run a sub-19:00, Boxheimer was followed by Morgan Perry (19:08.7) in 12th and Cayla Del Piano (19:27.4) in 17th. Dee Dee Adams made her collegiate debut with an 18th-place finish in a time of 19:28.2.
Similar to its male counterpart, the Pitt women's squad fell only to Duquesne, which claimed each of the top nine individual spots. The Panthers did defeat Carnegie Mellon and Youngstown State.
Pitt will compete again on Sept. 13 when it travels to Penn State for the Spiked Shoe Invitational. Collegiate races in University Park, Pa., begin at 5:30 p.m.
