PITTSBURGH - The Pitt men's and women's cross country teams held their annual Alumni Meet at Schenley Park on Friday, Aug. 29.
Current student-athletes were paired up with each other while a group of alumni formed teams as well. For the women, each runner went a 3K distance for a total of a 6K course. The men's race was slightly longer with each participant running a 4K on the 8K course.
Winning the women's relay meet was the duo of sophomore Joslin Sellers and junior Dee Dee Adams. Running the first leg, Sellers had just the seventh fastest time of 12:01 - 30 seconds behind the leader, senior Samantha Owens (11:31). But a strong kick by Adams, who ran the final 3K in 11:06, gave the tandem the win in a time of 23:07.
Coming in second by only three seconds were seniors Lindsay Jones and Hilary Boxheimer at 23:07. The next three places were separated by a mere second. Freshmen Madeline Schmiedeknecht and Beth Schenck (23:16) edged out Owens and freshman Melanie Vlasic by a split second. Freshmen Courtney Group and Amy Kelley rounded out the top five in 23:17.
On the men's side, sophomore Chris Pastore was a part of two top-three finishes. With an odd number of entrants, Pastore doubled up with Asa Equels and freshman Ryan Hughes. Pastore had the second fastest time on the first leg of 13:00, only a second behind freshman Nate Sloan (12:59). Both of Pastore's partners went neck-and-neck for the final 4K, with Equels coming across the finish line first with a personal time of 13:52.33. The pair combined for a time of 26:52.33. Hughes' time of 13:52.81 was good for third place (26:52.81).
Sneaking into second place was sophomore Chris Montgomery (13:15) and freshman Eric Stratman (13:37.58) with a combined time of 26:52.58. Stratman had the fastest final leg for the men. The remainder of the top-five finished within seven seconds of the leader. Junior Wes Roberts and freshman Kazangian (26:55) were fourth and Solan and freshman Aaron Lauer (26:59) were fifth.
Pitt opens the 2014 season next weekend on Saturday, Sept. 6 with a split squad. Members of the Panther cross country team will travel to either Seton Hill for the Griffin Classic or the University of Buffalo for the UB Stampede Invite.
