Pittsburgh Opens Season at West Virginia
Sept. 2, 2000 Morgantown, W.V. - The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's cross country team traveled to Morgantown, W.V., for the Hillbilly Shootout to open their 2000 season. The men's team defeated Youngstown State, but fell to host West Virginia on the 8,100-meter course, one point behind runner-up Youngstown State. Senior Mike Head (New Kinsington, Pa./Valley) had a strong outing with a fourth-place finish with a time of 27:43, which is his highest career finish. Others to crack the top 10 were freshman Michael Diano, who ran 28:01.10 to finish sixth, and senior Justin Wiley (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion), who placed eighth with a time of 28:15.90. The women's team dropped a pair to the Penguins and Mountaineers also placed third with a total of 76 points, running a 4,800-meter course. Junior Amanda Schmidt (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) paced the Panthers with a ninth-place finish (19:28).
