LEHIGH- The Pitt women's cross country team won its second straight meet on Friday in the Brown race (6k) at Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University. The women's team placed first out of an astounding 39 teams in the Brown race.
Freshman Rachel Brown was the first Panther to cross the finish line in eighth place out of a total of 342 runners with a time of 22:17. This marks the third different Panther to cross the finish line in first place for Pitt in all three meets this year.
Two other freshmen cracked the top-30 as well. Freshman Hillary Boxheimer placed 23rd with a time of 22:42 to make this her third straight race that she has contributed a score. Freshman Alexandra Cady ran a 22:48 to finish in 28th place and broke into the top five in scoring for Pitt the first time this year.
Assistant coach, Clinton Bell was very proud of his team; "All 10 of our ladies that competed in the Brown race gave a valiant effort.I believe that we have a strong team when you can possibly have a different top five at any meet."
The Pitt women also chalked up important wins over conference foe South Florida and Monmouth University who is ranked 15th in the Mid Atlantic Region.
The men's cross country team finished in seventh place in the Brown race out of a total of 33 teams in the 8k.
Senior Andrew Cerrito crossed the finish line first for the Panthers for the second consecutive time this year placing 18th and running his second fastest 8k with a time of 25:50. Junior Richard Addison ran a 25:57 (24th) and junior Ben Kisley ran a 26:02 (26th) to finish within the top 30.
The Panthers will return to action on October 6 to race locally in the Carnegie Mellon University Invitational.
