Pittsburgh -
The University of Pittsburgh's men's and
women's cross country had successful
outings at the Duquesne Invitational,
held Sept. 30 in Pittsburgh's Schenley
Park. The women registered a runner-up
finish and the men placed third.
The women's team had five individuals
place among the top 20, including three
in the top 10. Junior Amanda Schmidt
(Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), who has been
Pittsburgh's top finisher each meet
this season, once again showed her
leadership. Schmidt claimed a career-best
sixth-place finish with a time of 18:51.
Junior Beth Rocks (Philadelphia, Pa./
Nazareth Academy) placed eighth (18:58)
and senior Sarah McMillan (Hollidaysburg,
Pa./Hollidaysburg) placed ninth (19:00)
as each earn edtheir first career top
10 finish. Rounding out the Panthers
top performers were Dawn Hilgert (Columbia,
Pa./Lancaster Catholic), who was 16th
(19:26), and Misha Bilyeu (Chesapeake,
Va./Hickory), who was 19th (19:49).
The men were led by a pair of seasoned
veterans and a newcomer. Seniors Mike
Head (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) and
Justin Wiley (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion)
placed ninth (26:41) and 11th (26:50),
respectively. Freshman Mike Diano (Penn
Hills, Pa./Penn Hills), who has been the
team's top finisher in each of the past
two meets, was 14th with a time of 27:00.
