Pittsburgh's Cross Country Teams Have a Strong Outing in Their Season Opener

The women's team had an impressive 5-1 record at the Duquesne Duals.

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh cross country teams opened their 2002 campaign this past Saturday at the Duquesne Duals, held at Schenley Park. The women’s squad went 5-1 while the men’s team was 2-4.

Leading the way for the women’s team was sophomore Maureen McCandless (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy). McCandless finished second with a time of 18:32, only 10 seconds behind the women’s champion Katie Aerni. Junior Rachel Rothe (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) finished fourth with a time of 18:43.

Rounding out the top five for the women’s team were junior Dawn Hilgert (Columbia, Pa./Lancaster), who finished 11th in 19:37, Kelly O’Connell (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area), who was 13th in 19:39, and Nicole Angstadt (Kutztown, Pa./Fleetwood), finishing 14th in 19:41.

Dan Hull (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) paced the men’s team by finishing 15th in 22:08. Jeryl Wilborn (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) was the next Panther to cross the line in 19th place with a time of 22:21. Mike Diano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) finished 21st in 22:22, while Nick Westerman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) came in 30th place with a time of 22:43.

Pittsburgh returns to action on Sept. 27 as they compete in the Duquesne Invitational.
