Pittsburgh Cross Country Teams Compete at the Iona Meet of Champions

Maureen McCandless leads the way for the women's third-place finish.

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh cross country teams competed Saturday at the Iona Meet of Champions held in Van Cortland Park, New York. The women’s team finished third while the men’s squad placed 16th.

 

Leading the way for the women was junior Maureen McCandless (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy), who crossed the finish line 10th with a time of 22:24.1. Junior Lauren Shaffer (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) was the next Panther to finish, placing 22nd  in a time of 22:51.4. Running a time of 23:15, senior Rachel Rothe (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) placed 42nd while freshman teammate Suzy Bossart (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) placed 49th with a time of 23:22.

 

Senior Mike Diano (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) was the first Panther to reach the finish line for the men placing 76th with a time of 27:19. Junior Nick Westerman (Cincinnati, Oh/Elder) was not far behind running a time of 27:27.6, finishing 86th.

 

The Panthers have two weeks before their next competition, which is on Saturday, October 11, at the National Open Invitational held at State College, Pa.
