Cross Country Teams Compete in Duquesne Invitational

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh cross country teams competed this past weekend at the Duquesne Invitational held in Schenley Park. The women’s team placed second out of nine teams while the men’s team finished fourth out of nine teams.

Sophomore Maureen McCandless (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) took home top honors in the women’s field, finishing first with a time of 18:01. Junior Rachel Rothe (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) was the next Panther to cross the finish line, racing to a sixth-place finish in 18:53.

Junior Dawn Hilgert (Columbia, Pa./Lancaster), who finished 10th in 19:34, freshman Kelly O’Connell (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville), who placed 16th with a time of 19:40, and freshman Nicole Angstadt (Kutztown, Pa./Fleetwood), placing 21st, rounded out the top five for the women’s squad.

For the second straight meet this season, Dan Hull (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led the way for the men’s team with a fifth-place finish in 27:00. Jeryl Wilborn (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) finished 13th with a time of 27:29, while Nick Westerman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) came in 16th place in 27:36. Mike Diano (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) also added a 22nd-place finish for Pittsburgh, crossing the finish line in 28:07.

Pittsburgh returns to action this Friday as they travel to Notre Dame, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational.
